Chapter 11 of Mark Briggs’ “Journalism Next” textbook tells about the changes that news organizations face today in regard to the return that they will receive on a story or video content.
This directly involves to ratings for TV stations, and link visibility online. Briggs claims that newspapers measure everything they do. He uses The Knoxville (Tenn.) News Sentinel as a perfect example of this phenomenon. The Sentinel explains to its employees, every morning, how their newspaper, both in print, and online, did.
The Sentinel also measures progress of individual employees by a diagram with a list of skills at the top.
Briggs says that a journalist or newsroom should track the following items, among others:
- Total news stories per day
- Blog posts by a specific blog
- Breaking news e-mail alerts.
Websites can be utilized, as well as Microsoft Excel, to measure progress in these fields. One great, free website, according to Briggs, is Google Analytics.
Overall, in the changing world of online journalism, newsrooms and journalists alike need to measure their performance so they know exactly what to correct. This will make their organization better, and it will provide their viewers, listeners or readers with an enhanced, more polished product.
